Popularity of Programming Languages and Software Developer Tools
Comparison of software engineering tools and languages
The Pragmatic Engineer letter published a couple days ago survey statistics of the popularity of programming languages, IDEs, AI tools and other data for mid-2025.
Here I keep some bits that are of interest to me. The full report is quite big and detailed. Please see link to this full survey newsletter below.
Most popular programming languages in 2025
In this diagram see that the most popular languages are Typescript, Python and Javascript.
We checked similar statistics earlier in Programming languages and frameworks popularity. It showed there that most popular languages were Python, C++ and Java
Most Popular AI tools in 2025
The most mentioned AI tools are Github Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor and Claude. And Gemini too, ok.
I think those are just most mentioned tools. Out of theese Github Copilot and Cursors are most developer-oriented ones to my taste. And notice, there is no Amazon Q here in the top… See more: AI Coding Assistants Comparison
Most Popular IDEs in 2025
From this diagram we see the most popular IDEs are VSCode, Cursor, IntelliJ, VisualStudio and PyCharm. This very well alligns with languages popularity: Java/Typescript, Java, C# and Python.
Most Popular CI/CD in 2025
Most popular tools for continuous integration and delivery are Github Actions and Jenkins. Very easy to believe. Free cloud hosted and free Self-hosted.
Most Popular Version control providers in 2025
Github, Bitbucket and Gitlab. Free, well integrated and selfhosted.
Most Popular Cloud Providers in 2025
The most popular cloud provider is AWS, then Azure and GCP a bit behind. See also Cloud LLM Providers.
Most Popular IaaS and PaaS in 2025
The most popular IaaS and PaaS are Vercel, Heroku, Hetzner, Render and Digital Ocean. Not the Oracle with their free tier. Probably too complicated. Or maybe they are in Cloud’s remaining 8%?
Conclusion
Code Typescript or Python in VSCode/Github Copilot or Cursor, host on AWS and use some Github Actions or Jenkins for CI/CD at least.
